FirstTel System Components

The FirstTel tracking and messaging system consists of the following components:

  • Wide-area mesh network operating on the public ISM radio band
  • Ultra-precise, highly reliable GPS
  • Quick-swap battery system
  • Waterproof housing
  • iOS and Android mobile applications

FirstTel Mesh Network

FirstTel delivers a self-healing, flexible, and adaptive wireless mesh network on the unlicensed ISM band, designed for resilient communication in demanding environments.

The FirstTel network is designed to achieve the following primary objectives:

  • Enhanced Coverage:Eliminates dead zones by providing strong, consistent connectivity across the operational area where firefighter teams work. The network maintains reliable connections in challenging environments, including dense forests and mountainous terrain.
  • Reliability and Redundancy:Multiple communication paths eliminate single points of failure, ensuring continuous operation and supporting firefighter safety in mission-critical situations.
  • Simplified Management and Scalability:The FirstTel network is self-organizing and self-configuring. Nodes can be added in real time to expand coverage, and if a node is removed or damaged, the network automatically self-heals and continues operating.

The self-organizing mesh architecture significantly enhances rescue operations. For example, a search dog or drone equipped with a FirstTel device (node) can automatically bridge isolated subnetworks in real time. As illustrated in the following figure, a drone in flight can interconnect three previously isolated subnetworks (shown with red dashed lines) into a single, unified network.

Accurate and Reliable GPS

FirstTel tracking devices leverage multiple GPS constellations, providing signals from an average of 23 satellites at any given time. This enables rapid position acquisition—typically within 20 seconds from a cold start—and delivers sub-meter accuracy in open environments. Most importantly, the multi-constellation approach ensures reliable positioning for firefighters operating in challenging conditions such as dense forests and deep valleys.

System Security

FirstTel devices operate in secure, independent groups. Multiple groups can share the same radio channel while remaining fully isolated from one another, ensuring that messages are not accessible across groups. All communications are encrypted, providing strong protection for message confidentiality and operational security.
